Euskal Herria Jamaika Clash
By Angel • Sep 3rd, 2008 • Category: Disco de la Semana, RECOMENDACIONES, World MusicBabylon won’t fall, but the rebels continue their struggle. History goes on and events are recurrent. Taking up arms makes it perishable. The only thing left to the rebels: reggae music. The lion of Juda , wandering from Ethiopia to Jamaica, now continues its march to the sound of a rebel cry: Gora Euskal Herria!

It is impossible to speak of Fermin Muguruza without talking about politics, his pro-independence statements sympathizing with Batasuna and its constant accusations from the AVT. But from all this, his political activities might pass unnoticed because by clinging to the music he acquires immunity and manifests peacefully, setting an example for basque fanaticism, creating, not destroying.
But what relationship can there be among the rastafarian spirit and basque nationalism according to Muguruza ? It is understandable their traditionalist attitude and it is admirable how they defend their heritage, the rebellion is justifiable before the alienation of their customs. Since the former Fermin’s group, Negu Gorriak, have had issues with the law; the group has been sued for using illegaly the honour and name of Lieutenant Colonel Galindo of the Civil Guard. It was a good thing only to be sued and did not proceed with an attack as they did with Bob Marley .
It was necessary, given Fermin’ s much affinity to reggae to go to Jamaica and share studio with musicians like Rita Marley , Uzziah ‘Sticky’ Thompson , Daniel ‘Axe Man’ Thompson , Wayne Clarke , Frankin ‘Bubler’ Thompson , Wayne Armond , Dean Fraser and David Madden . All of these with great reputation for having participated in groups such as Skatalites , Shaggy , Jimmy Cliff and Steel Pulse . Recording in nothing less than Tuff Gong International , the studio dreamed by Marley .
Euskal Herria Jamaika Clash is neither the best Reggea or Ska record. Nor is a disc whose lyrics (for those who understand basque) are revealing. This disc is simply an audio-document that strengthens a cause.
The basque country’s independence has been achieved and this is because artists like Muguruza make it happen. When I speak of independence I mean something which value can be even more significant that the political or economic. I mean the distinction and authenticity of their culture and spirit in which nothing external can intervene.
Muguruza knows what is the weapon that must be taken to end such a force that homogeinizes and alienates people.

Gora Euskadi!
