La música se siente de muchas maneras, entra por el oído, pero se manifiesta cuando se nos pone la piel de gallina, cuando se dilatan las pupilas, cuando el hombro o el pie comienzan a llevar el ritmo, cuando se saliva, o como el caso del funk, que nos remonta a la fragancia más exquisita del climax sexual.

Algunos diccionarios de principios del siglo pasado definían la palabra Funk como el olor corporal o el aroma del acto sexual, y es de ahí precisamente que a varios músicos afroamericanos les naciera el decir, “Now, put some stank (”stink”/funk) on it!”, a la hora de dejar el alma y dar rienda suelta a la pasión que sentían al poseer sensualmente su respectivo instrumento. Muchas canciones de este género hacen referencia a la atracción física, al erotísimo, a la sensualidad, ya que sus melodías son cadenciosas, pegajozas y casi en todos los casos cuentan con arreglos explosivos que simulan al orgasmo mismo.

No es coincidencia que el Funk esté asociado con el final de la década de los sesentas y buena parte de los setentas, ya que existe la creencia popular que fueron años de extrema sensualidad y apertura mental respecto a la sexualidad. Dado que la música no es más que un reflejo de las sociedades mismas, lo que gozan, lo que sufren, sus virtudes y defectos, el Funk deja muy en claro que es un género hecho para aquellos que somos de nervios sensibles y extremadamente débiles ante la belleza y al erotismo del movimiento natural de las caderas.

No hay excusa válida para resistirse ante las caricias de una guitarra con wha sobre una linea de bajo potente llena de slaps, acompañada por el dominante sonido de una batería inyectando vida a la obra de arte que hacen las trompetas, saxofones, trombones y clarinete. Desde James Brown con canciones como “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine”, o “Cold Sweat”, hasta Tower of Power, pasando por George Clinton, Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, The Dazz Band, Earth, Wind and Fire y Blood, Sweet and Tears, el Funk tiene muchas variantes y se se han logrado varios mestizajes con géneros hermanos como el Jazz, R&B, Rock, etc…
